Attachment- & Trauma- Dysregulation

An Introduction

November 2, 2007

National-Louis University

At their core, children and youth with Attachment problems do not know how to have relationships with other human beings.  It is no wonder, then, that parents - biological, adoptive and foster - struggle greatly to keep them in the home.

We at House Calls Counseling, therefore, are engaged in the study and treatment of children and youth with Attachment- and Trauma- Dysregulation.

We understand that the causes of Attachment- and Trauma- Dysregulation -- traumatic childhood neglect and abuse -- have the power to inflict great developmental damage on children between birth and age three; developmental damage that, untreated, leads to a lifetime of extremely difficult relationships for the child or youth with nearly everyone with whom they have contact.  These children often have a wide variety of extreme and exhausting symptoms.

Our Approach to Treatment

Our therapists employ a model of treatment that integrates successful approaches to treatment and their "accompanying research paradigms (which) differ from most traditional clinical perspectives” (Solomon & Siegel, 2003).  This treatment model is firmly based in the Stages of Psychosocial Development of Erik Erikson and employs the work of Theraplay®, Attachment-Focused Family Therapy (Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy), and An Interpersonal Neurobiology of Psychotherapy.

Our method for working with families and their children or youth with Attachment- and Trauma- Dysregulation includes longer sessions and extensive support and training for the child or youth's primary caregiver.  Click here to request an assessment or treatment.

Commitment to Education and Training

House Calls Counseling recognizes that there is a great deal of misinformation about Attachment Disorder, and a great lack of understanding within the general public and amongst helping professionals on the topic.  We believe it is critically important for us to continue studying and learning about the topic as well as for us to help promote an increased and accurate awareness of the disorder.  We have two workshops on the topic, "When They Don't Connect: An Overview of Attachment Disorder" and "Connecting the Disconnected: An Approach to Treating Attachment Disorder."

We have presented "When They Don't Connect: An Overview of Attachment Disorder," to the Cook County Juvenile Court Judges, the Cook County Public Guardians, and the Kane County CASA workers.  The workshop explores the development of attachment disorder, the behavioral symptoms of youth with attachment disorder, the differentiation between attachment disorder and other childhood diagnoses, the process of planning for care of youth with attachment disorder, and methods for managing the behavioral manifestations of attachment disorder.

We have presented "Connecting the Disconnected: An Integrative Approach to Treating Attachment Disorders" to clinicians at two social service agencies that treat children and youth.  The House Calls Counseling Clinical Director presented the workshop at the state-wide conference of the Illinois chapter of the National Association of Social Workers held September 19-21, 2005 in Chicago, Illinois.
